"When Matthew Nolan first approached me and asked to handpick five of my favourite musicians to play in duo with I didn’t take long to accept. It is the stuff of dreams to be in such a position. Duos are special: the balance between the two musicians, the clarity of hearing each performer, the nimbleness of response all excite me.

It’s not exactly on purpose that the first two guests are from Norway. Although unguided by geography, the Norwegian scene, to me, has always stood as a blueprint for how to use the old music and refocus it through a contemporary lens. Eivind Aarset and Unni Løvlid are two musicians at the forefront of that practice. I’m interested to see how I can bring some of my sound to theirs. To sidle up to your heroes and try to make musical sense can be dangerous. And I do like a little danger when making music."
